I believe Ms Vande Kraats (V) knew that she was in conflict with the contract she had with the school when she started her common law arrangement, else the school did a bad job of informing her of her contractual obligations. I am sorry she lost her job, I know what that is like. The divorce rate is very similar between Christians and non Christians, but people in authority in the Christian fellowship have a particular responsibility to live by example. I believe that if V was contrite and willing to change her ways in line with the schools, she would still have her job, but the article does not report on that.
Principal Loewen made the point that private schools save the government a lot of money through parental funding of tuition. However, citizens should not use the financial argument in support of a moral position or chaos will ensue. In Ontario, Christian schools are not government funded. Lots of people lose their jobs because of breach of contract. She was not hired under discrimination. If Ms V wishes to test whether she has been discriminated against according to government standards, that is up to here. As Christians. we are to "give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's", but we are also to live under Triune God's judgement. I think God is in favour of separating the church from the state. We live in a country where we can live as believers in the Triune God or not believe; I think that is why we can say we live in freedom. "Discrimination" is a double edged sword, one person's version of discrimination may be another person's version of justice.
I found the reference to the ruling of the Supreme Court of Canada in favour of the Catholic school that fired a teacher after marrying a divorced man interesting. The verdict that "non-profit religious institutions have the right to give preference to members of the group their organizations serve" discriminates against God as He is the one Christians serve. It is sad that governments do not use the Triune God as a term of reference.
Ms V wonders "if the climate (political) is changing now". God does not do politics, and he is unchanging but gracious.
The end of the article closes with statements by Raji Mangat. I believe that religious rights are also a human right, so where is the conflict. Same sex marriage is not recognized by God. There are no dark secrets in Christian schools. Christians around the world have been persecuted for their beliefs for over 2 millenia.
So far we are mostly able to separate church and state. Not so much in China.
