Author Nicholas Kristof praises Canadians for: helping, welcoming refugees, support for human and woman’s rights, compassion, love of peace, and humility. He says we are “not capable of mean emails”. We encourage “entrepreneurship without enormous inequalities”.
Will Canada remain a polite people in the face of changes in the hemisphere and in the the rest of the world? Nicholas Kristof has pointed out Canadian politicians are speaking out on the world stage. We drew the ire of Saudi Arabia and paid a price. We have detained a Chinese Diplomat and been thrown under the bus by the American president for our attempt to live by the rule of law. Recently our government has worked with the Lima group allies and offered 53 million dollars and support to Venezuelan refugees with the hope that Venezuelan government would conduct a fair election. That is not outright support of Juan Guido. Other free world countries then gave support while counties lead by dictators want Nicolas Maduro to remain. Leader of the NDP Jagmeet Singh believes that Venezuelans have the right to self-determination. Dr. John Kirk from Dalhousie University asks “Has Canada overstepped by getting directly involved with political crisis in Venezuela?”.
If we don’t speak out will that put us in the same category as countries who have little influence in the world? Let us remember the words of recently passed Paul Dewar NDP who said “propose solutions, reject cynicism, respect ideas, collaborate”. I love my country; if I had lived in any other country I would be living miserably. Canada has provided for me when I was needy.
